//PERFORM /SPEAK /WORKSHOP

Perform & Speak

Artists, educators, builders, engineers, software creators, researchers, community organizers. If you have something to teach, demonstrate, or perform that will resonate with people who care deeply about electronic sound, you're a candidate.

Performances

//001

Performance at NAESE is baked into our DNA.

From daytime listening sets to late-night performances, NAESE features artists who have something to say and formats designed for genuine listening. The emphasis is on intentional sound and strong presentation, not genre purity.

Formats we'll program

  • Intimate listening sets: instrument-forward, low-noise rooms
  • Hardware-live performances
  • Laptop-live performances
  • Hybrid hardware/software setups
  • Headline evening performances Friday and Saturday nights
  • Saturday late-night programming through approximately 1:00 AM

What stands out

You don't need to be famous. You need to be thoughtful and prepared. Strong proposals describe what attendees will hear, what your setup looks like, and what makes the performance different from a generic gig. Performance examples (links to past sets) are required.

Talks & Panels

//002

NAESE prioritizes sessions that are practical, well-scoped, and genuinely useful.

What we're looking for

  • Sound design, composition, and performance techniques
  • Hardware and software design stories
  • Workflow and creative process
  • Education and pedagogy
  • History and culture of electronic instruments
  • Demonstrations that teach rather than pitch

If people leave smarter, more curious, or more capable than when they arrived, it fits. Less keynote energy, more workbench energy. Share the answers you can't Google.

Workshops & Hands-On

//003

Hands-on sessions are welcome. If participants will be doing something actively, the proposal should clearly describe what attendees will do, what they need to bring, and what will be provided. Strong workshops have a defined outcome — "by the end of this hour, you'll have built / patched / programmed X."

What helps a workshop proposal stand out

  • Clear skill level (Beginner / Intermediate / Advanced / Mixed)
  • Hands-on attendance cap appropriate to the room and the activity
  • Clear materials list — what you provide, what attendees bring, what NAESE provides
  • Realistic time budget — what fits in 60 / 90 / 120 minutes

How to Apply

//004

Applications open through the official submission form on the NAESE website. You can apply for performance, talk, panel, workshop, demo, or any combination — one application form, multiple application types.

What you'll need

  • Artist / project name (public-facing)
  • Short bio (50–120 words)
  • 1–3 links to your work (website, Bandcamp, SoundCloud, YouTube, IG, etc.)
  • For performance applications: 2 performance examples preferred, 1 minimum
  • For talks / workshops: a one-paragraph description, skill level, format, and any technical / room needs
  • Set length preferences (for performers): 20 / 30 / 45 / 60 / 90+ minutes
  • Setup type and stage footprint
  • Code of conduct acknowledgement
  • Recording / promotion acknowledgement (sessions may be recorded)

How selection works

Programming is curated. Proposals are reviewed for fit, clarity, quality, and how they contribute to the overall balance of the program. Clear, well-scoped proposals stand out. Applying to perform doesn't disqualify you from also applying to exhibit, and vice versa — programming and exhibitor selection are evaluated separately.

// Submission deadline

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis with priority for earlier submissions. Specific open / close dates will be published when the application form goes live. For questions in the meantime, contact hello@naese.co.
